New Learning Technology Conference, February 18-20, 2009

February 10, 2009

Warrenton, VA – February 10, 2008 – Hot Lava Software will represent the Mobile Learning market (mlearning) at the 2009 New Learning Technologies Conference (SALT), to be held February 18-22, 2009, at the Ramada Orlando Celebration Hotel and Convention Center, Orlando, Florida.

Mobile Learning or m-Learning is to 2009 what eLearning was to 1999. Listen to presentations which identify who today’s mobile learner is, lessons learned in the development of courseware for executives delivered to their mobile devices, and how one project proved successful in reaching over 116,000 users in over 114 countries to demonstrate the potential for delivering STEM education to hundreds of thousands—even millions—of people, via their mobile phones.

“The addition of wireless technologies, mobile devices, PDAs, PocketPCs and smartphones has changed the way people work and communicate. Mobile technologies are changing the way we do business, training and learning,” says Bob Sanregret, CEO, Hot Lava Software, Inc. “Technology experts are continuing to push the mobile e-learning envelope, by thinking outside the box. We are honored and excited, both, to be a part of this conference, and to share our cutting-edge, mobile e-learning knowledge.”

Some of the key topics presented in the Mobile Computing sessions will be: Sports Bytes Delivers STEM Content to Mobile Phones Worldwide being presented by Dr. Heather Katz; Corporate Mobile Learning – “A View from the Field” being presented by Hot Lava Software along with Alcatel-Lucent; and The Future of Mobile Learning: a panel discussion by experts in the area of mobile learning, mobile testing and mobile surveys. For a complete listing of speakers, please visit http://salt.org/grid.asp?Show=Speaker

Hot Lava Software will also be hosting a Mobile e-Learning (bring your own laptop) Hands-on Workshop Tuesday, February 17 from 1:30 – 5:00. The tutorial will focus on all aspects of mobile e-learning from designing to tracking. Participants will use the latest in tools and solutions to design, create, publish and deploy mobile learning to phones and PDAs.

Singapore – December 11, 2008.   High interaction and group participation is in the palm of their hands.  Each team is given 3 hours to complete their quest.  All teams have to plan, decide, organize and navigate to prominent landmarks in the WW2 sites to find the answers, seize a token or perform an activity as stipulated in the mobile device to accumulate their points.

On arrival at the site, the GPS Pocket PC would trigger a matching site picture to affirm that they are on the right location.  Participants then choose to read the text, watch a short video-clip, enjoy a sight and sound presentation for the clues or proceed to seize a token, perform an activity or answer all the questions specified.  Answers to the questions could be found on-site or embedded within the mobile device.

Visitors will be able to embark on a self-guided journey to explore the cause and impact of the Fall of Fortress Singapore in WW2; and to learn valuable historical, leadership and strategic lessons from our traumatic past as part of the larger National Education and Total Defense thrust.

WASHINGTON, DC (August 27, 2008)—On July 1, 2008, kajeet, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, and Hot Lava Software, Inc. began to impact the way that youth learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The Sports Bytes Competition allows youth to learn about the science behind sports via their mobile phones. Sports Bytes focuses on popular sports through “brain-teaser” questions that allow users to relate STEM concepts to real world contexts. Questions involving baseball will challenge the user to determine whether a professional batter can decide to swing literally in a blink of an eye. Other featured sports are soccer, cycling, and swimming, which provide practical application to STEM concepts.

kajeet is the only pay-as-you-go cell phone service that puts kids first while simultaneously empowering them and keeping them safe—facilitating them to respond with confidence to what’s happening in their world. “We are capitalizing on young fans’ love for cell phones by using them as a learning tool,” said Merrilea J. Mayo, Ph.D., Director, Future of Learning Initiatives for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. “This new competition allows us to reach and inspire kids in a unique way. Our hope is that they learn how exciting science can be and potentially explore a career in the field.”

Powered by Hot Lava Software’s Mobile Delivery and Tracking System (MDTS), kajeet users can access Sports Bytes from their kajeet phone deck menu.  After answering a STEM question they are rewarded with free Sports Bytes themed wallpapers for their mobile phones.

Since July 1, 2008, the global Sports Bytes Competition has gone beyond kajeet users to engage thousands of people within Africa,  Asia, Europe and North America. As of August 15, the promotion has over 130,000 registered users and over 40,000 users who have answered one or more questions about the science behind sports.

To participate in the Sports Bytes Competition right now, text sport to 83960 or text your answer to the question below to 83960.

A pro batter decides to swing in a blink of an eye?

  • Text “sporta” for TRUE to 83960
  • Text “sportb” for FALSE to 83960

Baseball Used to Teach Kids About Math and Science Through Sports Byte Competition

WARRENTON, Va-August 4, 2008-The Ewing Kauffman Foundation realized that a growing problem in our society is the lack of interest in the math and science fields of study, especially in the up and coming generation of students. With an interesting play on learning and enabled by Hot Lava Software, kids are “head faked”, using the words of Randy Pausch, into learning about the science behind the game of baseball.

Minor League teams such as the Frederick Keys, Bowie Baysocks, Wilmington Blue Rocks (click link to see an example of the Sports Bytes competition), Delmarva Shorebirds, Kansas City T-Bones, and Alberdeen Ironbirds have already started participating in this new-age learning program.

At home games, between innings, a nutty professor takes the stage on top of the home team dugout. Quickly catching the attention of the audience, a cell phone ring is played over the loud speaker. The professor challenges the audience, “Are you smarter than me, the professor?”

Now that the audience is enticed, “the professor” asks a science-based question about the game of baseball such as “Which has more drag, a smooth ball (sporta) or a rough ball (sportb)?”

Using the technology by Hot Lava Software, answers are text messaged to a number that is displayed up on the big screen and immediately the user receives a text message back that states if the answer provided was correct along with a hot link to a site with more educational information about baseball. Out of all the participants, one is chosen to receive a prize package including things such as team paraphernalia all the way to a free Kajeet cell phone.

Audiences seem very interested in this technology-enabled between inning game. The pre-teen to teen ages especially show great interest in participating in a game at a baseball stadium where they are the target audience and they can utilize their cell phones. It is a change to the activities that focus more on younger children.

So far tens of thousands of baseball fans have been reached through this method of learning simply by attending a baseball game. Without even knowing, all of these users have experienced more than just a baseball game when the last pitch is thrown; they have been taught the physics behind the game and a few walk away inspired to learn more.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – July 15, 2008  – More than one competition will take place at the local T-Bones games this summer. The new Sports Bytes Competition, entering the field this July, is sponsored by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and powered by Hot Lava Software.

The Sports Bytes Competition will engage the young fans in the crowd by sending them mathematics, engineering, technology, and science questions via their cell phones. Combining fun with technology, fans will learn the science behind one of America’s favorite pastimes. For example, while the players are warming up for the next inning, fans can learn about the impact of gravity and friction on a baseball’s path.

The in-game promotions will build excitement around science education during July and August home games. The Sports Bytes professor – a quirky-looking, crazy-haired announcer – will leap up on the dugout and guide the crowd through the sports-related science quiz. The announcer will ask the fans a question: “Which ball has the slower speed when thrown: a baseball or a softball?” In response, kids will text either “sporta” for baseball or “sportb” for softball to 83960. They will then receive a response text with the correct answer as well as a link that provides them access to other Sports Bytes questions. Sports Bytes enthusiasts can access the questions anytime from their mobile phones by texting “sport” to 83960.

“We are capitalizing on young fans’ love for cell phones by using them as a learning tool,” said Merrilea J. Mayo, Ph.D., director, Future of Learning Initiatives for the Kauffman Foundation. “This new competition allows us to reach and inspire kids in a unique way. Our hope is that they learn how exciting science can be and potentially explore a career in the field.”

The kids who answer at least one Sports Bytes question correctly are entered into a drawing to win a prize pack, which is given out later in the game. With baseball players in mind, the prize pack will include free tickets to an upcoming T-Bones game, signed baseballs, a first pitch certificate, a kajeet mobile phone, and T-Bones merchandise.

In addition to the T-Bones, the Frederick Keys, Aberdeen Ironbirds, Bowie Baysox, Wilmington Blue Rocks and Delmarva Shorebirds are participating in the in-game promotions, along with the D.C. United Soccer Team.
