User’s Group Meeting

June 29, 2006

I had the pleasure of attending a Conference yesterday where a group of individuals spoke of what LMA, LMS, LMC and Hot Lava had affored them the opportunties to do.

I learned about ‘Chunking content into appropriate Nuggest for m-Learning.’ I found out there is a Mobile Content Developer Certification program in the works out of Singapore, that was very much interesting.

A gentleman representing the Mem-Cards Corporation was there speaking on that product and how it was using LMA and Mobile Learning to get their product out to people.  You can visit www.mem-cards.com and click on ’suggested uses for Mem-cards’ under ‘corporate programs’ to see what is available.  We were given a sample of a set of cards they did for Club Med, using CM’s color scheme.  What a great personal coaching tool these little cards are.

Someone spoke about ‘Using LMA in solutions on higher education & capturing feedback.’  Speaking in relation to the University level and how these students were using their Razor phones, or even Ipods to help with their continued education.

A gentleman from Naois spoke about IMELS (Integrated Education and Learning System) enabling the disabled access, via mobile technology, the educational content they might need to become more independent. Did you know that 6.4M students are in some way utilizing some form of Assistive technology?  These individuals have physical, cognitive, and speech disabilities.

60% of disabled students never use a computer, verses 25% of non-disabled students.  9:1 student have computers in urban areas.  Less than 10% of disabled students have internet access (38%).

Also, the potential for this technology to be used in the Restaurant world to train new employees, or retrain old employees.  It’s not just the Restaurant world, what of the Service area, HVAC service Techs, or even Auto mechanics.  Tracking of inventory, performance evaluations, etc.

This is some pretty amazing stuff.

Do you know what ASP.NET is?

June 21, 2006

I didn't, and I was asked to proof a guide my company was using.

Wikia says, 'ASP.NET is a set of web development technologies marketed by Microsoft. Programmers can use it to build dynamic web sites, web applications and XML web services. It is part of Microsoft's .NET platform and is the successor to Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) technology.'

Still not entirely sure what it's all about.  Over the weekend, I was speaking with my father regarding it.  And low and behold, he knew far more than I did about it. You can't begin to imagine my surprise at the fact my father is far more computer advanced than myself.

I don't claim to know everything, but I had no idea.  I definately have a ton to learn and a lot to read in order to accomplish this feet.

Hot Lava LMS (Learning Management System) has the ability to integrate with third party applications using different technologies.  I'm reading this and still realize I am not grasping what it's all about.

All I do know is that Hot Lava is using ASP.NET to create/develop and release their mobules for Mobile Learning or Learning Mobile Authoring.  Utilizing Palms, PDAs, Cell phones, and PocketPCs.  They can be used with a desktop, as well as a laptop.

Let Hot Lava Software, Inc take your company into the next technological generation with task tracking, employee e-learning from off-job sites, what ever your company needs, let Hot Lava help you.

HR shouldn't be left out here either.  Evaluations can all be done via mobile devices as well. Have a service department and need to know where your guys are, or what jobs they've completed, what it took to complete them? Let Hot Lava help you. (www.hotlavasoftware.com)

WAP – Wireless Application Protocol

June 15, 2006

Ever heard of it?  I hadn't till today.  Rather, I read it in a post made to a yahoo groups discussion board on LMC.  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HLS_LMC

Wikiapedia explains it like so,"WAP is an open international standard for applications that use wireless communication (for example, Internet access from a mobile phone). WAP was designed to provide services equivalent to a web browser with some mobile-specific additions, being specifically designed to address the limitations of very small portable devices. It is now the protocol used for the majority of the world's mobile Internet sites, otherwise known as wap-sites (WAPsites, WAP sites, wapsites, etc.). The Japanese i-mode system is the other major competing wireless data protocol."

I don't know about you, but it's still all very greek to me.  And mind you, I love Greek food. 😀  But in the yahoo post, the author was asking if 'content created in LMA will be for WAP delivery vs. packaged content (PRC or Windows exe)?'

I'd love to hear what you think about this?  Remeber, your knowledge is the key to my success.

Mobile Learning is Everywhere ..

June 8, 2006

Palm in useLiterally, everywhere.  I had no idea this was taking place, and I consider, rather considered myself somewhat of a computer techi.  Do they still use that term? See, I feel I've fallen out of the loop here.

In accepting a marketing position with a fast growing 'Information Super Highway' type company called Hot Lava Software, Inc. (www.hotlavasoftware.com), I began to realize just how little I actually did know anymore.  Since, I've made an effort to read blogs on the topic, surf through other Distance and Mobile learning sites.

The way devices are being utilized today was beyond my thought process.  Palm OS, or any varition there of, Pocket PCs; frankly, had no idea these exsisted, Cell phones and laptops.  Did you know you can download programs to your cell phone and keep track of your daily work process?  Folks like the Commerical HVAC industry could totally use this technology.  Do you want a free download, try here:  www.ircremote.com

Kids today can download a module in order to teach themselves a foriegn language or prepare for the new Standardized Test preps that the government has passed into law.  Here's a free example of a module to help prep for 3rd Grade Math: http://hotlavasoftware.com/product_info.php?products_id=138&osCsid=e1f1c5d85ffcfc0faa1eecb05039f960

Adults can download to their Pocket PCs, Palms, Blackberrys, and even cell phones and continue their strive for that degree that will ensure them a higher paying position within their own company.  Or to catch the eye of a competitor who might just pay them more than their current company.

I've realized I have a lot more to learn about 'What is Mobile Learning' and how it can affect my job today and in the future.  How it can affect my sister's students in Alaska and their drive to become this world's next leaders.

Hello world!
